LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Dear Rhode Islanders ... The third issue of Just Playin' sport Magazine officially completes the 2005-2006 high school sports season in Rhode Island. Photographing and talking to interesting and talented student athletes, coaches, parents and fans has been a fascinating and adventurous journey. I especially enjoyed listening to the aspirations of high school seniors, since my daughter Abbey is a graduating senior. As I observed many student athletes throughout the season, I wondered how participating in high school athletics has prepared them for the future and how these experiences would fit into their lives as alumni once they walk down their high school halls for the last time. A few of the student athlete scholars will attend prestigious colleges on full athletic scholarships. More students have chosen to play intramural sports in college, easing their commitments and work loads to concentrate on their studies. Most will not play organized team sports again, but rather cherish the lifelong lessons and friendships acquired as student athletes and reliving these glory days at high school reunions. All of the graduating student athletes that I spoke with are planning to attend college in the fall.
We live in a world of "left" and "right brained" people. "Left brained" graduates will head into safe fields providing balance in checkbooks and order within Rhode Island's boundaries. We should be thankful that they exist. "Right brained" graduates might look around and decide that it is too early for career decisions. When you ask a right brainer, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" their eyes will glaze over. This type of person will probably explore and test the educational waters, possibly changing majors and schools a few times prior to finding a niche (a.k.a. a way to pay the bills). During this process they will discover a hidden talent and transform this talent into a career. These are the lifelong learners in our society. Two college degrees, 15 years of college credits, and approx 29 years of work experience later, I have finally discovered what I would like to be when I grow up. Whatever category you might fall into, head into the world with a happy heart and courageous Spirit. I congratulate and dedicate this issue to all Rhode Island graduating seniors, particularly "right brainers." Be patient with your dreams; visit them on a regular basis. Have a safe, fun summer……see you in September! Sincerely yours, |
