LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
To sum up the winter high school sports season in one word, I will use one of my mom's favorite words -- serendipity. A word that is part of our daily lives and can be described as "finding wonderful surprises along your travels when you least expect them." Heading out to photograph winter sports took every ounce of motivation within me after a hot home cooked meal, the lure of a fleece blanket and thoughts of missing my favorite TV show, "American Idol." Leaving the house was the tough part; watching and photographing a great game was the worthwhile reward at the end of my day. Hundreds of photos later and the culmination of another exciting sport season have resulted in the second publication of Just Playin' sport Magazine! There are special moments and thanks that I would like to extend to the following people. Standing in a cold ice rink one night around 11:00pm, I said to the gentleman next to me, "It is soooooo cold in here!" He looked at me and simply said, "You must dress for it." Slightly embarrassed but confident in my conviction and lifelong philosophy -- "style before practicality" -- I gave my outfit a quick once over and realized he was right. My next trip out to the ice rink was not so fashionable, but cozier and more enjoyable. Special thanks to the fan that brought this to my attention. I cannot leave out the kind person pumping gas after a long exhausting work day in Pawtucket. I was lost and driving aimlessly through Pawtucket in search of a high school basketball game one cold winter night. Completely frustrated, I pulled into a gas station searching for a kind face to help me find my way. I saw many tired faces. In desperation I asked the closest gas pumper to help me find St. Raphael's Academy. Apparently too tired to explain he said, "Follow me, I live nearby." Not listening to my mom's voice within me saying "Don't follow strangers," the story has a happy ending. After several left and right turns, I followed him directly to the entrance of the school in time for the basketball game and off he went. The first two letters of his RI license plate are "RA" .... three cheers to you for your kindness! You will find my favorite sections in this issue once again -- the Coach Profiles and Style. Peruse the Coach Profiles and read the similar message conveyed by these wonderful people ... make sports fun for kids, let the lifelong lessons unfold and allow student athletes to reach for their own stars. A hockey fan asked me why there is a fashion section in a sports magazine. My answer was, "a fashion statement can be as significant as a slam dunk!" It was so refreshing to see most athletes, particularly girls, act completely comfortable posing for photos after a long strenuous game, unconcerned with their appearance. I reminded the slightly concerned that "You are athletes; this is what athletes look like." The same student athletes love fashion out of the sports arena as you can see in the "Just my Style" section. Times have changed and it's ok for a girl to shoot a hockey puck and wear pink! It's also ok to wear a Tye Dye Tuxedo to a dance, and especially refreshing to hear that student say with complete confidence, "This is me." Sincerely yours, |
