I would like to share an idea and a dream of mine that has been overwhelmingly supported and energized by student athletes, coaches and parents whom I have spoken with throughout Rhode Island over the past year. My proposal is to publish a free Rhode Island high school varsity sports' magazine entitled "Just Playin' sport™"

I am a native Rhode Islander and a graduate of Tollgate High School, New England Institute of Technology and Rhode Island College. As a proud mother of two Rhode Island high school students (Abbey, age 17, grade 12 and Emily, age 15, grade 10), a good portion of my time has been spent watching Abbey perform in a high school marching band at football games and Emily playing soccer at the middle and high school levels in Rhode Island. It has been a pleasure experiencing the energy displayed by my daughters in addition to many other talented, hardworking student athletes, inspiring motivating coaches, exuberant loyal fans, and proud dedicated parents and family members.

My extensive education, hobbies and work experience include course work in desktop publishing, photography, computer graphics and work experience gained through employment at a local weekly newspaper and a large daily newspaper in Rhode Island for 10 years. It is my hope and aspiration to bring each sport's season alive in a photographic format including rosters, game scores and stats in a quality magazine circulated to thousands of students and athletes at the end of each season. I have witnessed enough positive moments in interscholastic sports to fill volumes and believe that a keepsake such as this would be a Rhode Island sports treasure.

How do I plan on filling the pages? I intend to spend hours photographing as many athletes, fans and band members in Rhode Island beginning in the fall of 2005 as possible and by welcoming contributions from parents and students .  Contributors would be recognized and eligible for free gifts and photo contests offering cash awards for the photographs submitted and printed in Just Playin' sport.

As you are aware, there are approximately 10,000 high school athletes exhibiting the value of discipline, sacrifice, commitment and teamwork in Rhode Island each season. There is no greater joy for a student, parent, and fan than to see the name and photo of a favorite athlete in print. My mission is to provide this joy to as many of the 10,000 student athletes and their families as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you and capturing your favorite athlete out on the field this fall. Please send along team name, participating sport, and student athlete's name/jersey number for special consideration to editor@JPsportRI.com.

Good luck to all athletes trying out for fall sports beginning August 20th!

Sincerely yours,
Gail Barbone Miller
